GMTA ANNOUNCEMENT

IRF/IFTA COVID-19 Extension Applies

More than a few members reported some issues recently with the Department of Revenue notifying them of fines for late registration renewal despite the March 25 announcement from the Department that:

“In addition to the tax deadline extension, all vehicle registrations that expire between March 16, 2020, and May 14, 2020, have been extended through May 15, 2020. This extension applies to all annual registrations, including personal passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, vehicles registered in the International Registration Plan (IRP), and Temporary Operating Permits (TOPs) issued at the time of a vehicle purchase. Registrations that expired before March 16, 2020, do not qualify for this extension.”

Once GMTA was aware of the issue, the association asked our General Counsel, Pitts Carr of Carr, Weatherby, LLC, to address the apparent contradiction. In short order, Pitts was able to gain both clarification and clear direction from the Attorney General that the extension noted in the press release does, in fact, apply to all commercial vehicles including trucks registered under IRP.

Please join us in thanking Pitts Carr for his quick, effective handling of the issue for all GMTA members – and remember, the deadline is May 15.
